Week 8

In Language Arts,  we have begun a unit on poetry.  We will read, read, read poems for enjoyment, for understanding, and to analyze the poet’s craft.  In writing, we will discover our creative side and write poetry in various forms.

In SS: We will be learning about Puerto Rico and write poems on things we learn.

In math, we are finishing units on data and graphing, place value, addition, subtraction, and estimation.  Next week, we will begin a unit on multiplication.  We will be developing our understanding of what multiplication is and the different ways in which we can solve a multiplication problem.  It is not too early to work on the automaticity of multiplication facts through 12 x 12.

In science, we will be talking about the different forms of energy.  Ask your child what types we are discussing.

How you can help your child– Please look over all of your child’s returned and graded work with your child every week.  Students should be looking to see items that were correct and items that were missed.  Students should correct missed items.  They do not need to return them back to me if they scored a 70% or above. However, we learn from our mistakes.  We also learn what we need to continue doing.  This weekly check on past work is a good time to set goals for the coming week.  Students have the opportunity to correct or redo assignments that receive below a 70%. If a student does not understand a concept, I reteach that concept and give the student the opportunity to make corrections.  This process is usually done in class.   If a paper was just done too quickly, I will mark the paper with a request to redo and return.  Retakes and redo’s get the maximum grade of 70% (which is a D).   Please let me know if you have any questions.  If you and your student do not understand why an item was marked wrong, please have them bring it back in order to ask me.  I can explain or it just might be an error on my part and I can adjust the grade.

Reminders/Announcements:
1. Please make sure you are dropping off your student in designated drop off areas.  Please do not drop off behind our portables.  I know it is convenient.  However, it is prohibited, due to the safety of all.
2. Math test on Wednesday, Oct 3rd.
3. The last day of the first nine weeks is Friday, October 19 th.    All assignments need to be turned in on or before that date.  Students' grades will be finalized the following week.   If you would like to check your student’s grades, please see Home Access.   Please let me know if you need help in logging on.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
