What are we learning: Week 3

Parents,

Students will receive their first batch of graded work in their Thursday folders this week.  Please remember, as I told the students, that grades are a learning tool.  It is a measure on how you did on a particular assignment and task on a certain day.  The grade tells the student and me as their teacher what they need to work on.  Students will need to understand that all individual grades count toward a final grade.  Effort on each assignment, including slowing down and double checking work before you turn it in is really important to reach goals of excellent grades.  Learning from our mistakes is a key to success.  Students should spend some time each week going over their graded work and figuring out what they did wrong and what they did well.  If a student does not understand how an assignment was graded or why they got something wrong, please encourage them to bring it back so that I can explain or change the grade if I made an error.

Spelling: The first spelling test will be given this Friday. Your child has been working with the words in different ways and investigating the phonetic rule those words follow through activities we've done in class.  I've included a list of activities that students can do at home in the homework packet. It is also on the class website. Each weekday night a different activity is suggested to be completed with the words.  However, students may practice in any way that works for them.  Students will be tested on the words every other Friday.  Students will also be asked to write down the dictation sentences as part of the assessment.  Students do not need to memorize the sentences.  I will read them aloud and they will write them with correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.  This week we will continue to work on Unit 1 words in class.  If your child requires extra practice, they should do so at home.  Beginning next week, all word study/spelling work will be practiced at home.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

In language, we are working on picking “just right books’, genres, and increasing our stamina for silent reading.

In writing, students are working on creating complete sentences and will be in the beginning stages of writing small moments.

In math students are working on data and graphing.  We are focusing on analyzing data and digging deeper into the information graphs tell us.

In science, we are working on matter; the states of matter and its properties. Students will have their first science test on week 4. Date to be determined.

Reminders/Announcements:
1.  Thank to everyone who was able to attend Back-to-School Night.  I have emailed the Powerpoint to all parents in case you've missed it or would like to go over it again.
2. Visit our class’ website for suggested spelling activities,  and math vocabulary to study.
3. Home Access for your student’s grades and assignments is up and running.  It is an online version of my grade book.  You can sign up via R.R.I.S.D.  It is a very useful tool in showing kids how grades work, setting goals, and ensuring assignments are up to date. You will need to create an account. I will be posting grades this week.
4. Our library day is every other Thursday. The next time our class will go is on Sept 6th.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
